Trip Diary

February 5-11

February 5, 2005

Went to Tombstone. Looked at all the gift shops. Found a few souvenirs. Some shops were selling buffalo teeth, bobcat faces, snake vertebrae, and other parts. Ate an ostrich burger for lunch. Saw gal riding her horse while standing up. Saw a cute pony that was very startled as a young child screeched to a halt next to it. The child had wheels on her tennis shoes. Updated web site.

Did laundry. Laundry room has mural of Native American women washing clothes along a river. Went to store and found bargains. Let Keiko run off leash in hiking trail area. She’s decided that some plants are prickly and that some fences are prickly too ie barbed wire. Watched Super Bowl.

Went to Bisbee. The town is a mining town built in a narrow valley. Houses were where they could find room going up the hill. Some with massive retaining walls beneath them, others on stilts to level them out. The shops reflect a community of artisans...out of our price range. We went on the Queen Mine tour down to 1500 feet. Inside the mine it was 50 degrees. Outside the mine it was only 47. Stopped in Tombstone for lunch at Big Nosed Kate’s. We were not waited on; thus we left, just like last year.

Attended a presentation by a local rancher on emus in the evening. He also raises pygmy goats and yaks. The yaks apparently can easily clear a 5 foot fence if they wish.

February 8, 2005

Went to Sierra Vista. Looked at many stores. Did some grocery shopping.

February 9, 2005

Keiko went out on a off leash run. She spotted a jackrabbit on the trail. Instead of chasing after it, she snuggled in close. When it left, she went over to the spot where it was and marked it.

Went to Tombstone. Toured the court house. Took pictures of the gallows. There was a warning sign outside regarding the possible presence of bats and not disturbing them. Was disappointed at not seeing any.

Went to see the world’s largest rosebush. Enjoyed seeing it and it’s accompanying museum, including gossip lock; a 175 year old quilt; an assayers scale that can measure the weight of a mark made by a pencil, “horseshoes” for mules and oxen.

Went to Big Nosed Kate’s and were actually served. Best hamburger I’ve had. Went down the spiral staircase to see the shaft. The shaft is an escape mine shaft that leads out from the basement of Big Nosed Kate’s to hills outside of town. It was used by many in avoiding the law.
